I. Importance:

In light of the new requirements for visibility, community impact, and performance demanded by the Romanian Academy for the ranking of institutes operating under its umbrella, the partnership between the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch, the oldest history institute in the country, and Oxford Brookes University, respectively the Centre for Medical Humanities and the Working Group in the History of Race and Eugenics (HRE), represents an opportunity to connect with elite research worldwide.

The connection between the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch, and Oxford Brookes University is made through the C.I.E.R. (Centre for the History of Eugenics and Racism)

An identical research group was created in 2006 at Oxford Brookes University. In the year it was founded, it was the first of its kind in the world, coordinated by Marius Turda, professor at Oxford Brookes University and Honorary Member of the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch.

This group, established at Oxford, currently has members from 18 countries on different continents: Great Britain, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, and the USA (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/hpc/research/centre-for-medical-humanities/history-of-race-and-eugenics/)

II. Composition

The C.I.E.R. team within the “George Barițiu” Institute of History represents the Cluj extension of the similar team operating at Oxford Brookes University, with which the “George Barițiu” Institute of History concludes, on this occasion, a long-term partnership.

The C.I.E.R. team within the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch, is (currently) formed by those who are involved in the already approved projects where historians from the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch (and external specialists) will work alongside British specialists.

III. Financing the C.I.E.R. team

The activity of the C.I.E.R. collective will be based EXCLUSIVELY ON FUNDING FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES: the business environment, the Wellcome Trust Foundation in London and other funds from the private sector. 

IV. Dissemination of C.I.E.R. results:

Publication on the Institute of History website of all achievements and events organised by C.I.E.R. (responsible: Adelina Chișu – Ghepard Communication).

Organizing conferences (Oxford and Cluj), publication of volumes, and their media coverage (responsible: Adelina Chișu – Ghepard Communication), as well as organisation of exhibitions (Casa Tranzit in Cluj).

Launch of a master’s program at UBB Cluj dedicated to Eugenics and Biopolitics in Transylvania.

Interviuri de presă și TV și publicarea lor pe situl Institutului de Istorie.

Organizing a section within the Cluj Academic Days dedicated to Eugenics, Biopolitics, and Racism, where we will invite specialists from major universities in Europe and the USA to engage in debate on the mentioned topics.

Press and TV interviews, as well as their publication on the Institute of History website.
