The current “George Bariţiu” Institute of History continues the activity of the Institute of National History from the interwar period, with a specific focus on fundamental research based on the medieval, pre-modern, modern and contemporary history of Romania.

Starting in 1996, the Institute acquired the right to organise doctoral activities, currently employing 10 researchers/professors who, as doctoral supervisors, have coordinated the training programs of 105 doctoral students. Seventeen doctoral degrees have been confirmed. The rest of the doctoral students are in various stages of preparing and elaborating their doctoral theses. For full-time doctoral students, doctoral courses are held, led by four certified doctoral supervisors.

Since 1996, the Institute has been authorised to organise doctoral activities. Currently, there are 10 researchers/professors who, as doctoral supervisors, have coordinated the training programs of 153 doctoral students. A total of 91 doctoral degrees have been awarded. The remaining doctoral students are at various stages of training and thesis preparation.

For full-time doctoral students, doctoral courses are taught by four of the certified doctoral supervisors.

As an institution that offers a doctoral programme, the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch, awards doctorates in history, specialising in the medieval, modern, and contemporary history of Romania, as well as in cultural history.

Department of Social Sciences and Humanities
Presentation

The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities within the “George Bariţiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch, is, in terms of origin, general orientation and working style, the legitimate successor of some important research units, in which remarkable personalities of Romanian science and culture have carried out their activity.

The Department of Social Sciences and Humanities currently comprises the following departments: psychology, with 11 researchers; sociology, with six researchers; philosophy, with four researchers; law and economics, with four researchers, as well as seven employees with the status of auxiliary research staff. Of the total of 32 people employed, 13 are women, 11 hold the scientific title of doctor in their field, 8 hold the positions of Researcher I and Researcher II, equivalent to those of professor and associate professor, respectively, and 11 are young people under the age of 35.

Library
The library of the ``George Bariţiu`` Institute of History is a specialised department that emerged with the establishment of the institute. Its collection was built up over time through donations, exchanges, acquisitions, and subscriptions, including periodicals and books related to the history of Romania, universal history, Slavic history, and the history of culture, among others. On December 31, 2019, the library held a total of 28,364 volumes, comprising 21,524 books and 6,840 periodicals.

1920 - 2020
In 2020, the ``George Barițiu`` Institute of History in Cluj-Napoca of the Romanian Academy had the privilege of celebrating 100 years of existence in the service of the Nation and its History. Founded on February 2, 1920 under the title of the Institute of National History and initially placed under the aegis of the University of Cluj, it is known as the oldest Institute in Romania dedicated to the research of history and its related disciplines.
