The current “George Bariţiu” Institute of History continues the activity of the Institute of National History from the interwar period, with a specific focus on fundamental research based on the medieval, pre-modern, modern and contemporary history of Romania.
Starting in 1996, the Institute acquired the right to organise doctoral activities, currently employing 10 researchers/professors who, as doctoral supervisors, have coordinated the training programs of 105 doctoral students. Seventeen doctoral degrees have been confirmed. The rest of the doctoral students are in various stages of preparing and elaborating their doctoral theses. For full-time doctoral students, doctoral courses are held, led by four certified doctoral supervisors.
